The Monastery (2005, BBC)

So not having the ability to fall asleep at a regular time period is a good thing in the modern age, because you spend the entire time watching fascinating documentaries.  I watched the Monastery for about four hours last night, and I still wasn’t finished with it.

It’s a fascinating documentary about five British men who go to stay at a Benedectine monastery in England.  They spend 40 days on the grounds and have to participate in the daily rituals, like gettting up very early and spending lots of hours in silence and work.

The series is interesting because it doesn’t force the faith down on you.  I am agnostic and of no particular faith, but it is interesting to watch how these people deal with personal problems and issues of faith.

I have been fascinated by monastacism for a long time, and it was cool to see that such a documentary was made.  I haven’t finished watching it, so I can’t tell you how it ends.  But its interesting, and also . . . I guess TLC in America has made an American version of it, where the guys go to a monastery in Mississippi – would be interesting to catch that, but I don’t have cable, so I don’t think that’s gonna happen.

Anyway, you can watch the whole thing for free on Youtube at this link:
